Petrol seeps into wells at Kanakere, contaminates water

Mangaluru: Even as the city faces another possible water-crisis with the water level in most of the rivers showing a considerable dip despite the good rainfall in the district, residents of Kanakere in the city are faced with a grave problem.
It is reported that the well water at Kanakere near Derlakatte in Belma Gram Panchayat limits is contaminated with petrol, thus making it combustible and unfit for household use. Around five wells are already contaminated in the residential area, which has several open wells.
Though the locals informed the fire service department they allege that no one has visited the place yet.
“A petrol bunk is operating in Belma gram panchayat and there is a possibility of petrol seepage from there. A few years ago a retention wall of the petrol bunk had collapsed damaging the petrol tank. This may be the reason behind the seepage,” allege locals.
