Puttur: ‘Bakahu’ has been trending in Karnataka and neighbouring Kerala from Sunday after Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about it on his radio show ‘Mann Ki Baat.’
The prime minister praised the women of Dakshina Kannada district for increasing their income through the production and sale of Bakahu during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bakahu is short for ‘bale kai hudi’ (raw banana powder).
The powder has been used in the kitchens of coastal areas of southern Karnataka and northern Kerala for ages.
Recently, its use and popularity increased after women in these areas made the production and selling of it into a successful business venture.
Bakahu is used as an alternative to wheat flour and maida and is rich in nutrients such as vitamins, magnesium and potassium.
It is prepared by drying, in a dryer or under the sun, peeled raw bananas.
The peeled raw bananas must be first placed in ‘ganji teli’ (rice porridge water) with added salt and then dried.
After drying, the powder can be used in the preparation of many dishes.
