PM Modi Meets Suu Kyi In Myanmar

Naypyidaw (Myanmar): Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Myanmar’s capital Naypyidaw yesterday for a three-day visit. last night, PM Modi had said he had a “wonderful meeting” with Myanmar President Htin Kyawduring which they discussed steps to deepen the “historical relationship” between the two neighbours.
Today, PM Modi held talks with Myanmar’s State Counsellor and de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi. He is expected to raise the evacuation of Rohingya refuges into neighbouring countries.
He raised the issue of the exodus of the ethnic Rohingyas into neighbouring countries during his meeting with Aung San Suu Kyi.
Prime minister said India is concerned over the exodus of Rohingya Muslims and expect the it will be resolved soon.
The Indian government is also concerned about Rohingya immigrants in the country, and has been considering deporting them. Around 40,000 Rohingyas are said to be staying illegally in India.
India and Myanmar were also looking at strengthening existing cooperation in areas of security and counter- terrorism, trade and investment, infrastructure and energy, and culture, Modi had said ahead of his visit.
PM would deliver an address the Indian Community at an event later in the day.
This is PM Modi’s first bilateral visit to Myanmar. He had last visited the country in 2014 to attend the ASEAN-India Summit.
