Mangaluru: The Prime Minister’s Office has responded to a letter written by a Sullia resident on use of plastic banners in villages of Dakshina Kannada district, though the government’s Swachh Bharat campaign insists on the use of cloth banners.

Mahesh Puchchappady, 38, had sought the PM’s intervention to crack down on use of plastic banners at villages and had specifically named Guthigaru gram panchayat of Sullia taluk in his grievance letter.

A complaint was lodged with the PM’s Office on March 28 this year through the Centralized Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System of the department of administrative reforms and public grievances.

On October 17, the Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat received a response from the PMO directing them to take necessary action and avoid use of plastic banners. Copies of the said letters were despatched to Sullia taluk panchayat and Guthigaru gram panchayat on November 5 and a report on the action taken against those violating the plastic ban has been sought from them.

“Sullia and Guthigaru panchayats have been directed to take action against those who violate the plastic ban as per law. We will follow up on the matter,” said Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat chief executive officer R Selvamani.
