In a dramatic turn of events, police fired at a rape accused, Manjunath (26), who attempted to escape custody on Thursday morning (January 16). The accused sustained a bullet injury to his right leg and has been admitted to VIMS Hospital for treatment.
The case pertains to the horrific rape of a five-year-old girl in a village under the Toragallu police jurisdiction earlier this week. Following the crime, the accused abandoned the child in an abandoned house. The girl was later rescued and underwent surgery at a hospital, where she is now recovering.
Taking the case seriously, police formed three special teams to trace the accused. The investigation led them to Kamalapur native Manjunath, who was tracked down in Hulagi, Koppal.
On Thursday morning, while the police were conducting a spot investigation with the accused, Manjunath attempted to escape. He reportedly attacked Head Constable Raghupati during the commotion. In response, PSI Dakesh opened fire to prevent his escape, injuring him in the leg.
Manjunath has been hospitalized and is under police custody. The police are continuing their investigation to ensure justice for the victim.
