Mangaluru/Udupi: As preparations for New Year celebrations are in full swing, the police have intensified their vigilance on the potential rise of drug-related activities. Reports suggest that drug peddlers are attempting to cash in on the festive season by targeting parties and gatherings, especially in areas frequented by students and young people.
Crackdown on Drug Peddlers
Police sources revealed that several cases of drug trafficking and usage have already been detected in places like Mangaluru and Manipal. Drug suppliers are allegedly focusing on urban centers and even extending their networks to rural areas, raising serious concerns.
Reports indicate that drug parties are being organized under the guise of New Year celebrations, luring youngsters into substance abuse. For some, drugs like marijuana, MDMA, and cocaine are becoming alternatives to alcohol, reflecting a worrying trend among the youth, say police officials.
Drug Trafficking Routes
Synthetic party drugs such as LSD, ecstasy, and MDMA are reportedly being supplied from cities like Bengaluru and Goa to the coastal districts of Mangaluru and Udupi. Police had earlier nabbed several peddlers involved in supplying drugs from these regions.
However, with the New Year approaching, out-of-state peddlers are attempting to expand their reach in the coastal belt, anticipating increased demand for party drugs.
What Are Party Drugs?
Party drugs include substances like LSD stamps, ecstasy, and MDMA, often consumed at parties for their euphoric and energy-boosting effects. These drugs are sometimes sold at exorbitant rates in liquid drop form. Experts from de-addiction centers warn that such substances not only pose immediate risks like exploitation and crimes at parties but also have long-term harmful effects on the brain.
Cases Registered and Arrests Made
SP Yathish N. shared that 43 cases related to drug possession and consumption have been registered this year in Dakshina Kannada district. In 12 cases of drug possession, 14 individuals were arrested, and over 4 kg of marijuana and 25.33 grams of MDMA were seized. Additionally, 31 cases of drug consumption have been reported, leading to the arrest of 44 individuals.
Strict Measures Against Drug Use
“New Year celebrations should comply with laws and regulations. Any violations, especially drug use, will be dealt with strictly. Dedicated squads and police teams will monitor activities to ensure a drug-free environment. Youth are advised to stay away from all forms of intoxicants,” stated Mangaluru Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal and Udupi SP Dr. K. Arun.
