Bengaluru: In a show of dissent, Congress leaders, led by D.K. Shivakumar, met Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot on Saturday to submit a five-page memorandum. The leaders expressed concerns that the Governor was making “politically motivated decisions”, potentially compromising the sanctity of the Raj Bhavan.

The memorandum highlighted the Governor’s approval to prosecute Chief Minister Siddaramaiah while stalling corruption cases against Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and former ministers Janardhana Reddy, Murugesh Nirani, and Shashikala Jolle. The Congress delegation urged the Governor to grant permission to file chargesheets under Section 19 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Section 218 of the Indian Penal Code in these cases.

Stop Political Interference

The Congress, listing six key demands, emphasized the Governor’s role in upholding the Constitution. They called for unbiased decisions and urged the Governor to refrain from interfering in the functioning of the state government. The party also requested prompt approval of bills passed by the Legislative Assembly and urged the Governor to perform his constitutional duties without political influence.

Files Not in My Possession: Governor Gehlot

After receiving the memorandum, Governor Gehlot responded by stating that he did not possess the files related to the four individuals mentioned. He clarified that explanations had been sought for two cases, with no response yet, and one case had been dismissed. The Governor assured that all decisions were made impartially, without any political bias.

Coffee, Tea, and Snacks Offered: D.K. Shivakumar

Speaking to reporters outside the Raj Bhavan, D.K. Shivakumar mentioned that the delegation had sought an appointment with the Governor three days prior, which was granted on Saturday. The meeting was attended by party legislators, members of the Legislative Council, and MPs. Shivakumar noted that the Governor had offered them coffee, tea, and snacks, and assured them of justice.

Re-examination of Statements: D.K. Shivakumar

Shivakumar further criticized the Governor for issuing a show-cause notice to the Chief Minister based on a complaint. He pointed out that despite the Cabinet’s request to reject the prosecution, the Governor proceeded with it. He emphasized that the government, supported by 136 MLAs, should be protected by the Governor, not destabilized. Shivakumar reiterated the need for re-evaluation, stating that any statements made by the Governor would be re-examined by the party.
