Puducherry: Extending support to Jallikattu, students of various educational institutions including professional colleges in Puducherry abstained from classes today protesting the ban on the bull taming sport.

Sporting placards and banners in support of jallikattu, students formed a human chain and raised slogans condemning the ban. They also insisted that the ban should be lifted without any delay.

“Jallikattu is an ancient and time honoured tradition of Tamils and should never be banned,” the students said.

Police were deployed in strength to ensure that there was no disruption of traffic at the venue of agitation.

They later went in a procession from Natesan Nagar to the AFT mill ground on Puducherry-Cuddalore road to stage a dharna criticising the ban on the sport.

“The ban is utterly uncalled for and is an encroachment on the rights of Tamils,” they said.

Meanwhile, volunteers of various youth outfits staged a demonstration at various points in and around Puducherry extending support to Jallikattu.
