Postal service resumes as postal strike ends

Mangaluru/Udupi/Puttur: The postal strike which was conducted by the rural postal workers who accused that they had not received the benefits of the central government’s 7^th pay commission that was introduced a year back, has finally ended after sixteen days on Wednesday.

The 16 day strike came to an end after the central government promised to fulfill the postal workers demands.

The central government’s 7^th pay commission was introduced a year back. But, the rural postal workers have not been receiving the benefits of this programme. With reason to receive the benefits from the commission the rural postal workers started a strike demanding their rights on May 22^nd.

On Wednesday, the strike took place all over the nation and hundreds of workers protested in front Puttur senior chief post officer office and Udupi divisional office. The protest rally taken out at Karkala also received support from the Anganvadi workers group, rickshaw drivers group and Tempo drivers group.

On Wednesday, the union government responded to the Akhil Bhartiya Gramin Dak Sevak Union’s demands and hence we stopped the strike, informed Mangaluru Division president Harishwar, Puttur division president Vittal Poojary and Udupi division president Basava Billava. Union minister Manoj Sinha announced that a ministerial meeting took place in Delhi with relation to the demands which were approved in the meeting, informed the leaders.

The workers achieved victory through continuous fight, informed A.B. postman and MTS union state president Vijaya Nayari. The members of national postman and MTS union expressed happiness.

A mountain of mail

A mountain of undistributed mail including money orders, pension, normal mail, passport distribution, speed post, EMO, registered post, parcel, G.P./Z.P. by election, working teachers and graduate constituency election manifestos is lying in the rural post offices.

Service from today

All postal workers will report for duty on Thursday. There are 98,315, 218 branch postal offices in Mangaluru, Puttur and Udupi division respectively, and all will provide customer service from today.
