The construction of the Ram temple at Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh has begun and Sunni Central Waqf Board had also announced the formation of the all important Trust which will construct the mosque at Ayodhya in place of the Babri mosque which was demolished on December 6, 1992

Renowned architect SM Akhtar, the dean of Jamia Millia Islamia’s Architecture Department, will design the mosque and its surrounding complex.

Akhtar said, “Old mosques were built according to traditions of that time. Today, it will be constructed keeping in mind the needs and requirements of the 21st century. The design of the 16th century will not work for the new mosque”

He says that mosque will be modern, and the Mosque will also present a new face of Islam aiming to promote harmony among all communities. He cites a mosque built like a spaceship in Qatar and a zero-energy mosque in Kundapur, Karnataka.

Badriya Juma Masjid in Kodi, Kundapur, Udupi district is the world’s first “ZERO Energy” Eco Friendly Green Mosque

The important feature of this green building is that its entire energy requirement is met through hybrid renewable energy, both wind and solar.

The building orientation minimizes solar heat gain. The L shaped building plan and elevated nature of prayer hall, green vegetation & water tanks around it offer a naturally cooled environment.

According to Deccan Herald, the solar heat reflecting terrace floor, laid with white China mosaics and fitted with turbo vents, not only keep the prayer space cool, but also reduces warming of local micro climate.

The natural cooling of the building is accentuated by the wind scoop on 70 foot multifunctional Minaret (from where the Azan, the call for prayer is given) which forces down draft of cool breeze into the prayer hall and also supports the tower structure of wind turbine mounted atop it.

Ayodhya Mosque which will be built in the five-acre land will have also a hospital, a research centre, community kitchen and a museum, and Akhtar will design all of these.
