Prospective parking spaces to ease parking troubles in Mangaluru

Team Udayavani, Jan 17, 2021, 10:44 AM IST

Mangaluru: As the area of Mangaluru city is geographically very small, vehicle parking is a big challenge here.

There is an urgent need to make space for parking in the heart of the city. 90 per cent of commercial activities and government offices are concentrated in Jyoti, Hampankatte and State Bank areas.

Additionally, KSRTC station, private bus stations, Central railway station, hospitals, educational institutions, Central Market, malls, movie theatres and sports stadiums are also located in the centre of the city.

Thus, the oft-suggested solution to the problem of parking is building of multi-storey parking complexes.

The multi-storey parking system is already adopted by many other cities in the country. These are built either in public-private partnerships or owned by private entities.

Here is a list of areas in the city that is suitable for multi-storey parking systems:

– Old Bus Stand, Hampankatte
– Street vending space near park at Nehru Maidan
– Government land near KSRTC station
– Government land on Jail Road (Plans are underway to relocate the central jail)
– Area near skating zone at Kadri Park
– Land near Bangra Kuluru planned to be given to Forest Corporation
– Assorted government land at Mullikatte, Kadri and City Hospital
– Area near Kankanady market
– Assorted vacant land at Valencia and Nandigudde
– Area near Saturday market in Bikarnakatte-Kaikamba
– A multi-storey parking space in the proposed complex being built by the MCC at Mangaladevi area
– A multi-storey parking space at the proposed new Central Market complex
– A multi-storey parking space on PPP model at Jyothi, Bunts Hostel and Falnir
– A multi-storey parking space at any one of the government sites in the port
