Whenever there is a natural calamity, the duty of the fire fighting personnel is vital. The heavy rains on Tuesday claimed the lives of two people, caused widespread damage to houses and assets, yet the fire fighting personnel worked earnestly and provided emergency services thereby gaining the admiration of one and all. Here is an interview by Ganesh Mavanji with the Chief Fire Officer of Mangaluru Division Shivshankar on the maintenance of the situation.
How was the rescue operation?
Since the personnel were well trained and there was the availability of equipment, everything worked successfully. As we realized the rainfall was increasing along with the chance for more incidents, we immediately requisitioned additional vehicles and staff from Bantwal, Puttur and Sullia. Hence, no hindrances took place.
Were you faced by any difficult situations?
Nothing like that. But, it was not possible to save the woman buried under the mud at Udayanagar KPT. Even then, I’m proud that our personnel earnestly worked for the safety of life.
What precautionary steps have you taken?
Important 9 locations have been identified; a fire engine has been stationed there along with appointing of the staff. But, since there was minimal rain on Wednesday, there was no incident.
Coast Gaurd, NDRF and SPRF had also come to the city?
As a precautionary measure, additional rescue staff was requisitioned.
