Puttur: A chain used to restrain a drunk 33-year-old man proved fatal as he reportedly choked to death.

The deceased, identified as Chetan (33), resided in Bettampadi Kanumoole.

It is gathered that on the night of May 9, Chetan, under the influence of alcohol, caused disturbances at home. Later, he ventured to his neighbor Yusuf’s residence and reportedly vandalized the property by breaking a window. Upon witnessing this, Yusuf promptly contacted Chetan’s mother to inform her of the situation.

Efforts to calm Chetan proved futile as he resisted his mother and brother-in-law’s intervention. In a desperate attempt, Umawati and Yusuf used a chain to restrain him and dragged him home. At home, Chetan allegedly reacted violently causing the chain to tighten around his neck eventually leading to his death.

He was taken to hospital in Puttur where he was declared dead by the doctors. Initially, his family members purported Chetan’s death as a suicide.

However preliminary police investigations revealed discrepancies and Chetan’s brother-in-law, Umawati,  and Yusuf were interrogation. Later, Umawati and Yusuf were taken into custody. The police have initiated a suo moto case.

Forensic Examination:

Chetan’s body has been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory in Deralakatte, Mangaluru to ascertain the cause of his death. District Superintendent of Police Rishyant C.B. personally visited the scene to oversee the proceedings.
