Puttur: Teenager dies after surgery, relatives protest alleging ‘negligence’

Puttur: A case has been registered at Puttur City police station regarding the death of a teenage boy who had been admitted to a private hospital in the city.

The relatives of the deceased boy, identified as Sreejith (17) of Kasaba village of Sullia Taluk, protested alleging negligence by the hospital for his death.

The complaint filed by the boy’s uncle Krishna G said that Sreejith had been admitted to the hospital situated near the Puttur old taluk office, with complaints of stomach ache on the night of August 12. The duty doctors admitted the boy for observation.

On the morning of August 13, doctors advised surgery, which was held at 6 pm on the same day. The boy was kept in ICU after post-surgery.

The following day, i.e. August 14, the doctors advised the family to shift the boy to a hospital in Mangaluru immediately for further treatment as they lacked the necessary equipment. When he was rushed to Mangaluru in an ambulance, Sreejith was declared brought dead.

Dalit Seva Samiti members and the relatives of the boy went on a dharna in front of the hospital in Puttur alleging negligence by the hospital authorities for the boy’s death. Tehsildar J Shivashankar arrived at the spot and persuaded them to end the protest. he also received a memorandum from the protestors.
