Puttur: The Puttur town police have arrested three women in connection with two separate theft incidents.
The arrested accused have been identified as Vidya from Mangaluru’s Neermarga, and Jyothi and Yashoda from Bengaluru’s Rajajinagar.
Gold Rings Stolen Disguised as Customers
On December 13, a woman posing as a customer stole three gold rings weighing 9 grams, worth Rs 77,000, from a jeweller on Puttur Court Road. The shop owner, Shivaprasad Bhat, filed a complaint on December 19 after verifying CCTV footage. The stolen jewellery was recovered from the accused, police said.
Vidya attempted another theft at a neighboring shop but was caught red-handed by the shop owners. She was later handed over to the police and during interrogation, Vidya confessed to her crime, police added.
Fake Gold Swapped
Vidya reportedly swapped original gold rings with fake ones she carried. She would examine the rings, slyly replace them with fakes, and pocket the originals. The jeweller noticed the substitution days later during inventory checks. CCTV footage revealed her actions, leading to her identification and arrest.
Jewelry Stolen from Bag
In another case on December 19 that occurred at Puttur’s KSRTC bus stand, two unidentified women stole gold jewellery worth Rs 25,000 from the bag of a woman by diverting her attention. The victim, Saraswati, filed a complaint with Puttur town police.
Following the investigation, police arrested Jyothi and Yashoda and recovered the stolen jewelry.
Police said all three accused were presented before the court, which remanded them to judicial custody.
