Railway Police capture accused, recover stolen gold nearly Rs 5 lakh in Udupi

The railway police in Udupi have successfully apprehended the accused, who was attempting to flee on a train after stealing a bag containing gold ornaments, cards, and cash from a woman traveling on the Netravati Express. Within a span of four hours, they managed to recover the stolen belongings.

The accused was identified as Delhi native Sunny Malhotra (30).

Upon receiving the complaint from the woman via the Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) on duty, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) in Udupi promptly initiated an operation.

Observing a suspicious individual at the end of the platform, acting on the passenger’s complaint, they found the suspect’s travel ticket was from Mangaluru to Madgaon. During the interrogation, the suspect attempted to discard an ATM card in the bushes near the platform, which was promptly retrieved. The suspect provided evasive answers during questioning.

The suspect identified himself as Sunny Malhotra from Delhi when questioned by Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Sudhir.

The theft occurred at Thokur station, where the woman’s bag was taken. The perpetrator fled the scene, taking the cash and jewelry, and discarded the bag by the side of the tracks. He then boarded the moving Tirunelveli – Dadar Express.

Upon being apprehended at Udupi railway station, gold ornaments, including various chains weighing 93.17 grams and valued at approximately Rs 4,67,620, along with Rs 3,700 in cash and an ATM card, were found in his possession.

The accused, along with the stolen property, was handed over to the Manipal Police. According to the FIR registered at the Manipal Police Station, the total value of the stolen jewelry amounts to Rs 6,75,000.
