Rain-floods: Udupi suffers damages worth Rs 545 crore

Udupi: Due to the persisting inclement weather, the district has incurred damages worth Rs 545 crore. Four houses have been completely destroyed. Where is the necessity of constructing new houses? How many areca nut, coconut trees have been damaged? Conduct a re-survey in this connection, directed minister Kota Srinivas Poojary, speaking at the meeting held in connection to the natural disaster at DC office on Thursday.

There is report that 675 houses have been partially damaged. Since it is difficult to reside in houses which have suffered cracks and whose roof has been blown away, a re-survey is required. As per the government’s guidelines, Rs 5 lakh compensation for completely damaged houses can be provided only after a report has been submitted in this regard, he informed.

A compensation of only Rs 18,000 per hectare of damaged agricultural land is not enough. During land acquisition a coconut tree is given a compensation of Rs 13,000 while an areca nut tree is compensated for Rs 3,000 and similarly, a re-survey based on trees has been started in DK district and needs to be conducted in Udupi as well.

Altogether 1.3 lakh farmers from the district are eligible to get assistance from the union government. It has been provided in two phases to 67,444 farmers. It will be provided for others soon. Along with the union governments Rs 6,000, the state government’s Rs 4000 will be added to it, he informed.

112 schools, 70 aanganwadis damaged

112 schools have been damaged in Nandavana and Kirimanjeshwara which need to be repaired. 33 bridges have been damaged, informed the respective officials.

The cost of chopping down the tree in connection to the damage caused to a house in Handadi needs to be borne, informed MLA Raghupati Bhat. There are 335 such trees informed the DFO. Mr Bhat urged that the trees be chopped down by the government.
