Mangaluru: Incessant rain is also being experienced in Mangaluru city since two days. According to the forecast by the weather department, heavy rains are expected on Wednesday as well as on Thursday. Therefore ‘Red Alert’ has been announced to make sure no loss of life and property occurs in the city due to the inclement weather.
The rain started in the city from Monday midnight onwards and continued on to Tuesday. The heavy rains and strong winds on Tuesday caused artificial flooding at some low lying areas. No holiday was declared for schools on Tuesday and hence, the downpour in the morning did pose a challenge to parents and students going towards their schools.
The house belonging to Gauri located in Urwa was completely destroyed after a uprooted tree came down heavily on the house. Meanwhile, the heavy rains coupled with strong winds during the night brought down a massive tree at Kandettu in Shaktinagar near Nanthoor.
The torrents of rainwater brought down a compound wall of a house near Jail road. The collapse of the wall lodged mud into the rainwater drain there because of which the corporation had to undertake emergency restoration works here to normalize the flow of the accumulating rainwater. Water filled up at the underpass near Padil causing much trouble to motorists. Movement of vehicle was challenged by accumulating water at various locations in the city including Kottara, Kudroli, Kottara Chowki, Mannagudda, Kudroli, Dongerkere, Alake and other areas. The torrential rains that occurred in the morning when the people were leaving for their work caused a gridlock at Pumpwell, Nanthoor, Kankanady, PVS, Kottara Chowki, Jyothi, Bunts Hostel, Hamilton circle, Hampankatta and other areas.
Emergency numbers
As a precautionary step for the early monsoon showers, a 24hrs control room was opened at MCC. Separate teams have been appointed her for day and night shifts. The public can give their complaints by giving a call to 0824-2220319/2220306. Noticing the complaints, a gang will leave along with an engineer. Labourers, JCB and tippers have been kept on the standby. For the district administration control room, call 1077.
Heavy rains expected for two days
According to the forecast by the weather department, good rains are expected in Dakshina Kannada as well along the coast for the next two days coupled with winds of 40-50kmph are also expected. The sea has turned rough with huge strong waves crashing at Tannirbhavi and Panambur beaches, and hence, measures have been taken to prevent visitors from venturing into the water.
