Rain-related loss estimated at Rs 274 cr in DK

Mangaluru: The rain-related losses in Dakshina Kannada district, including road infrastructure and public properties, is estimated to be around Rs 274 crore, informed Chief Minister Yediyurrappa after visiting the flood-hit areas in the district.
Presiding over a review meeting in Dharmasthala here on Monday, Yediyurappa said the Rs 274 crore loss included PWD’s loss of around Rs 142 crore, national highway–Rs 15 crore and zilla panchayat–Rs 62 crore.
Responding to a request put forth by MLA U T Khader and MLC Ivan D’Souza urging the chief minister to direct officials not to harass the flood victims while assessing damage to the houses, immovable properties and crops, Yediyurappa assured that the victims would not face any inconvenience and directed officials not to harass flood victims citing legal issues while distributing compensation.
He directed the officials to take measures to ensure supply of ration and other essential commodities, including potable drinking water to the natural calamity victims.
Pacchanady landfill site
After MLA Dr Bharath Shetty apprised chief minister of the sliding of garbage from landfill site at Pacchanady which had affected over 25 houses and the need to clear the garbage, dumped on more than half a kilometre stretch, the latter asked the deputy commissioner to shift the affected houses.
Sea erosion at Sasihithlu and Mukka
As sea erosion continues to wreak havoc in Sasihithlu and Mukka, MLA Umanath Kotian urged Yediyurappa to undertake measures to tackle the issue.
