The Origins of Rum

The story of rum begins in the Caribbean in the 17th century. Sugarcane plantations were thriving, and the byproduct, molasses, was found to be perfect for fermentation.

The first distillation of rum happened in Barbados, where the locals discovered that fermented sugarcane juice could be turned into a delightful alcoholic beverage.

Navy Rum Rations: The British Royal Navy adopted the practice of giving sailors daily rum rations. This tradition, known as the “tot,” lasted until 1970. It was believed that rum boosted morale and helped sailors endure the harsh conditions at sea.

India has its own love affair with rum. The country’s climate and rich soil have made it an ideal place for growing sugarcane, leading to the production of high-quality rums. Rum Cocktails to Try

Mojito:

Ingredients: 2 oz white rum, 1/2 oz lime juice, 2 teaspoons sugar, 6-8 fresh mint leaves, soda water.
Method: Muddle the mint leaves and sugar in a glass. Add lime juice and rum, then fill the glass with ice. Top with soda water and stir gently. Garnish with a mint sprig.

Pina Colada:

Ingredients: 2 oz rum, 1 oz coconut cream, 1 oz heavy cream, 6 oz fresh pineapple juice, 1/2 cup crushed ice.
Method: Blend all the ingredients until smooth. Pour into a chilled glass and garnish with a pineapple slice and cherry.

Daiquiri:

Ingredients: 2 oz rum, 1 oz lime juice, 1/2 oz simple syrup.
Method: Shake all ingredients with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a lime wheel.
