Rapist gets 27 years RI

Important judgement by Udupi Special Court

Udupi: Arun Achari (32) from Perampalli near Udupi has been sentenced by Udupi district Special Court, to 27 years of Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) in connection to a rape of a minor girl.

On July 16, 2016 at around 8:30 am in the morning, a mentally challenged minor girl who was on her way to the school when Arun took her to lodges in Manipal. Since he was unable to get a room in any lodge, he took is victim to his own house where he sexually assaulted her. A case in this connection was later registered with Manipal police.

The then SI Girish S V conducted the investigation and later, Circle Inspector Sampath Kumar submitted the chargesheet. The district Special Court verified 30 witnesses. After analyzing the arguments, the chief judge C M Joshi passed the judgement that the guilt of the accused had been proved on April 10th.

District special public prosecutor Vijaya Vasu argued on behalf of the prosecution.

Tearful convict

As the Judge was announcing the quantum of his punishment, the convict standing in the witness box simply turned tearful. DNA report and the statement of the victim child played a major role in the judgement. The convict was not provided with bail for three years.

Quantum of punishment

10 years RI and Rs 30,000 fine for rape (sexual assault), 10 years RI and Rs 50,000 fine under POCSO, 7 years RI and Rs 30,000 fine for kidnapping. Of the total fine of Rs 1.10 lakh, Rs 1 lakh will go to the victim’s family while Rs 10,000 will be paid to the Court.
