“Red Alert”: Heavy downpour along Karavali coast to continue till July 12

Mangaluru/Udupi: Heavy Monsoon rains continued to lash Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. It rained throughout the day on Saturday also across the twin districts.

According to the weather bulletin from Indian Meteorological Department, heavy downpour is expected to continue till June 12. IMD has extended the “Red Alert” for the district till June 12.

Udupi district also received good rains. Rainfall was higher in the Kundapur taluk.

In Mangaluru city, rains let up a little in the afternoon. However, some areas including Kodialabail, Alake, Kudroli, Kottarachowki, and Nantoor, were waterlogged with the rainwater overflowing onto roads. A compound wall crashed at Chilimbi, damaging three houses.

At Subrahmanya, Kumaradhara bathing ghat was inundated. Good rainfall was observed in Belthangady Taluk as well.

Netravati water level close to danger mark

The water level in the Netravati river has risen to 8.5 m which is close to the danger mark. The water level which had fallen to 6.3m on Saturday morning, started rising by evening. The water level was expected to further rise in the nighttime. At 6 am on July 10, the water level reached 8.5 m.

The rise in water level has inundated the low-lying areas along the Netravati river in Bantwal. The District administration has taken steps to shift people affected to safer places.

Flight diverted to Kochi

Bad weather affected air traffic too. An Air India flight from Dubai could not land at Mangaluru International Airport due to the inclement weather conditions and was diverted to Kochi instead.

Red alert for 3 more days

IMD has predicted the rainfall to intensify in the coming days. The “Red Alert” warning has now been extended up to 8.30 AM on July 12. The expected rainfall is about 204.5 mm, the IMD said, and added that the wind gusts could increase the sea swell.
