Researchers have built an AI model capable of telling individual birds apart. The research is published in the British Ecological Society journal Methods in Ecology and Evolution.
The study provides the means of overcoming one of the greatest limitations in the study of wild birds. Birdwatchers usually find it difficult to individually identify birds
The study involved training AI to recognise images of individual birds in wild populations. When tested alongside images of individual birds, the models showed 90% accuracy for wild species and 87% for captive finches.
However, Researchers claim that it can only re-identify individuals that has been shown before, and it may struggle to spot birds if their appearance changes
