Mangaluru: Road closures should be a last resort and only implemented when there are significant issues such as landslides on Shiradi and Charmadi Ghats, said Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader on Monday. He emphasized the importance of addressing problems during road construction to prevent landslides during the monsoon.
Speaking at a press conference here, Khader mentioned that the entire road should not be closed just because of minor landslips. Only if absolutely necessary should a road closure be enforced. A team be deployed every 10 kilometers to clear any landslide debris and ensure smooth traffic flow, he suggested.
Khader stressed the need for coordination between the deputy commissioners of Dakshina Kannada, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, and Kodagu districts. A team of officials, including highway authorities and deputy commissioners, would inspect all affected areas and gather information, he said.
Setting Bad Precedence Unacceptable
Addressing concerns about the lack of debate in the legislative session, Khader clarified that proceedings must adhere to assembly rules. The alleged Valmiki scandal is currently under investigation, and although four days of debate was allowed, there was controversy over whether to allow discussions on the final day, khader said. “I ruled against it to avoid setting a bad precedent,” Khader added.
Khader stated that allowing such debates now could lead to problems in the future. He affirmed his commitment to maintaining legislative norms and not starting bad practices.
