Puttur: Umesh (30), an auto driver from Kenya in Aittoor village, who runs his auto in Mardhala, was attacked by a gang in the afternoon on Sunday, May 13. Information reveals that Umesh was a rowdy sheeter.

Umesh was chased by a gang with four to five members including a woman. They attacked him with a sharp weapon at Nekkithadka near Mardhala.

Umesh faced serious injuries in his back and waist. He was admitted into a private hospital in Mangaluru and his condition is still said to be serious. The motive for the attack seems to be past enmity.

The gang came in a red color Maruti Alto and followed Umesh’s auto rickshaw. They intercepted him near Bachinadi Cross, Nekkithadka. Umesh left his vehicle and began to run on the road towards

Mardhala but the gang chased him and managed to hit him with a sharp weapon near the Dargah at Nekkithadka. He fell into the roadside drain, and the attackers fled, leaving him bleeding profusely.

Additional superintendent of police, Sajit, deputy superintendent of police, Srinivas, rural police circle inspector, Gopal Naik, Kadaba police sub-inspector, Prakash Devadiga, and other staff visited the scene and collected evidence and details.

Umesh was named as an accused in a rape case which happened at Aittoor two years back.He had been released on bail. It is gathered that two months ago he visited Kiran, a relative of the complainant in the case, at Shishila in Beltangady taluk, where she currently lives. Umesh allegedly posed death threats to family members of the lady. Kiran was not at home at the time. He too happens to be a rowdy sheeter. It is said that the mother of the victim of the above incident already hated Umesh, and reportedly launched the murderous assault on Umesh.
