Rs 100 coins to be introduced to mark MGR birth centenary

New Delhi: The Ministry of Finance issued a notification on the introduction of Rs 100 coins to commemorate the birth centenary of AIADMK founder, former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Dr MG Ramachandaran and renowned Carnatic singer Dr MS Subbulakshmi.

The Reserve Bank of India will also issue new Rs 5 and Rs 10 coins. The coins will bear Ramachandaran’s portrait in the centre along with the inscription ‘DR M G Ramachandran Birth Centenary’ on the lower periphery.

“The coins of the following denominations (Rs 100 and Rs 5) shall also be coined under the authority of the Central Government to commemorate the occasion of Dr MG Ramachandran birth centenary,” the circular from the Finance Ministry said.

The new Rs 5 coin will be 23 millimeters in diameter and made of copper (75 per cent), zinc (20 per cent) and nickel (5 per cent). Where in the standard weight of Rs 100 coin will be made of 35 grams while that of Rs 5 coin will be 6 grams.
