Puttur: A 17-year-old girl sustained serious injuries after she along with her alleged lover attempted suicide by crashing their vehicle at Gundya near Uppinangadi on Wednesday, October 10.
The youth Sharanya, 20, a native of Bidar has been held by the police while the girl is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Mangaluru.
On October 8, the couple, who left home on October 5 arrived at Dharmasthala and tried to rent a room at a lodge. However, the lodge staffers suspected the couple’s relationship and not wanting to get into any trouble denied accommodation to them.
Upon coming to know that the girls’ father had lodged a kidnapping complaint with the Bidar police, the duo developed second thoughts of returning home and in this anxiety, they decided to end their lives.
The girl opined that it would be better if they die in an accident instead of committing suicide and hence she had abruptly steered the wheel of the vehicle causing it to crash against the mud wall along the roadside here, said Sharanayya to the police.
It is gathered that the girl has been given police protection, while the Bidar police, where the kidnapping complaint has been registered are expected to arrive today and take the youth in their custody.
