Santhekatte: Mud-collapse prevention works gain momentum

Udupi: In light of the potential disaster posed by the deep ditch dug for the construction of an overpass in Santhekatte, the National Highway Authority of India has initiated several preventive measures to protect the roads from damage caused by rainwater.

The works have picked up pace following instructions from Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje, who emphasized the need for immediate precautionary actions during a recent meeting with district administration officials.

Udupi Deputy Commissioner Kurma Rao convened a meeting with the Highways Authority, directing them to commence the necessary work promptly and provide a comprehensive report on the progress.

Responding to the Collector’s instructions, officials from the Highways Authority have accelerated the construction of a permanent retaining wall measuring approximately 380 meters in length and reaching a height of 3 to 6 meters. This wall is being built alongside the service road to prevent any potential water stagnation in the pit from affecting the highway.

Measures are also being taken on the opposite side of the pit adjacent to the highway to stabilize the soil and avoid any collapse. Soil-filled bags have been strategically placed to prevent mud collapse, accompanied by the construction of a temporary barrier and the installation of tarpaulin to provide additional protection.

Local residents have expressed concerns about the possibility of mud banks collapsing, particularly if the rain intensifies. While the prevention work continues, the fear of subsidence and its potential dangers to nearby roads and buildings still persists. Consequently, the locals have urged the authorities to expedite the necessary precautionary measures before the onset of heavy rainfall.
