SC adjourns PETA petition hearing on Kambala to Dec 12

Mangaluru: The petition filed by People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), came up for hearing before the Supreme Court (SC) on Friday, November 24, duly questioning an ordinance passed by the Karnataka government paving way for conducting Kambalas.

The petition from PETA was referred to the three-judge bench of the SC, questioning the way in which an ordinance legal process and legal validity of this ordinance and claiming that animal violence is a part of Kambala.

Hearing of this case began on November 6. After arguments on November 13^th and 17^th, the petition was adjourned to November 24. During the recent hearing on Friday, the lawyer for Karnataka government brought to the notice of the SC bench that Kambala bill has already been passed by the state legislature. Thereafter, the SC bench adjourned hearing in the case to December 12.

Three Kambalas have already been lined up to be held before December 12. Hokkadigoli Kambala is being organized today, with Mangaluru Kambala and Baradibeedu Kambala having been scheduled for December 3 and 9 respectively.

The Kambala bill that has got the assent of Karnataka legislature is in line for the approval from the governor before it gets published in the state gazette. Therefore, convener of Kambala Academy, Gunapal Kadamba, said that he is confident that Kambalas will be held as per schedule during this season.
