Bengaluru: Two incidents where prospective tenants draw off money from property owners using QR codes have taken place in Bengaluru.
Babu Reddy, a resident of Whitefield had published an online advertisement to rent out his 1BHK house. A person who identified as Advesh Kumar approached Reddy regarding the same. He asked the property owner to scan a QR code to verify bank details, after finalizing the deal.
Reddy initially scanned the code after which Rs 2 was debited from his account. Kumar returned Rs. 4 instead, followed by Kumar asking Reddy to scan once again to receive a sum of Rs. 30,000 but this time Reddy lost Rs. 79,997 from his bank account.
In yet another similar case, a person again identified as Advesh Kumar siphoned Rs 35,000 with the same method from Deepa Sistla, another Whitefield resident. Sistla had advertised her 2BHK property on online platforms.
The police suspect the same gang to be behind both cases.
