Schools reopen amidst water shortage

Mangaluru: Summer vacation has concluded and government primary and high schools have re-opened on Wednesday May 29. As per the government’s initiative to create a festive atmosphere in schools, ‘Prarambhotsava’ has been organised at schools.
In the backdrop of severe drinking water shortage plaguing the city, heads of several schools had raised concerns in this connection. But there has been no official communication from the government allowing the children go home after the morning session in view of acute water shortage faced by educational institutions.
Meanwhile the Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil has assured that water would be provided to any school that is facing shortage.
Inspection of basic facilities
Udupi: All primary and high schools including aided, unaided and private schools in the district will be re-opening on May 29th. There are almost 1.52 lakh students in the district and altogether there are 1,248 schools here. In accordance to the DDPI’s direction, the teachers visited their respective schools on Tuesday and inspected the cleanliness and basic facilities therein. Along with the celebration of ‘Prarambhotsava’ on Wednesday, those with the available text books will also distribute them to the children.
It has been estimated that close to 10-20% of the schools in the district are facing water shortage. Even if there are schools which are not facing water shortage, they might nonetheless face problem regarding ‘Akshara Dasoha’. The BEO of the respective zones have been directed to keep an eye out for such schools and take proper decisions, informed Udupi DDPI Sheshashayana Karanji.
