Mangaluru: A separate mother-child hospital is being constructed at the premises of Lady Goshen hospital at the cost of Rs 10 crore for the care of mother and child. This new separate building is being constructed by breaking down a part of the old building.

All the government hospitals in the state have mother-child hospital. Although approval was provided several years back for the creation of such a hospital, it could not be constructed due to delay ensued in the shifting from the old building to the new building. Now that the shifting has been completed, the mother-child hospital will be constructed at the location of the old building.

60 beds capacity

The new building is being constructed through the grant of Rs 10 crore from the National Health Mission (NHM). The hospital has 60 beds capacity. The construction work is being done by the engineers of the Health and Family Welfare Department. The work has begun and pillars have already been laid. The work is expected to be completed by one-and –a –half year, informed the engineering division of the department.

4,000 sq ft area limits

The new building has an area of 4,000 sq ft spread across basement, ground floor and first floor. Parking facility has been provided in the basement. The ground floor provides facilities like scanning, x-ray and other facilities while the complete first floor will be the ward with 60 beds capacity. The building under construction will be reserved only for mother and child. The presently existing building has 290 beds capacity. Of them, 155 are for childbirth, 12 for special new born infant and 10 beds for new born babies. The remaining beds have been reserved for mothers, uterus related problem and other diseases.

Rain water harvesting installed

The engineering department has come forward to install a rain water harvesting system at the new building. The old building did not have this facility. Now, the new building which is being constructed at the place of the old building will have rain water harvesting facility. In the backdrop of lack of water during the summer this year, action is being taken for the installation of rain water harvesting system at the new building as a precautionary measure.

Work to be done in a year-and-a-half

“A part of the old building at Lady Goshen hospital has been removed and a separate new hospital dedicated for mother and child is being constructed. The work on the new hospital is expected to be completed by a year-and-a-half. Like the new hospital, all facilities will be available at the new building being constructed,” said Dr Savita, Medical Superintendent, District Government Lady Goshen Hospital, Mangaluru
