Mangaluru: Members of the Students for Development (SFD) Mangalore celebrated the arrival of the New Year 2023 in a meaningful way on Sunday. The student organization in collaboration with the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) held a beach cleaning drive at the Tannnirbahvi beach today.
More than 100 student volunteers of SFD from various colleges in the city were joined by employees of the MCC in cleaning the waste accumulated on the popular beach.
The cleaning drive began at 9 am and a 3km beach stretch was cleaned until 12 pm. Armed with gunny bags the volunteers were separated into 4 groups of around 30 persons each. Each group was given the task of collecting a specific trash item. While one group collected glass and other recyclable materials, other groups were given the responsibility of collecting plastics and other nonrecyclable materials. This helped in segregating the waste, said SFD Pramukh Nischith Bantwal.
Mangalore City corporation arranged for the disposal of the garbage cleaned. Garbage collection vehicles from Antony Waste Handling Cell took the waste for further processing, Nischith added.
SFD, which is a wing of the ABVP, was created with a mandate of “protecting jal, jameen, janwar and jan” – all aspects of the environment, he said.
SFD Mangalore chapter office bearers including Vibhag Sanchalak Nishan Alva Kavoor, SFD Pramuk Nischith Bantwal, ABVP Mangalore taluk Sanchalak Adarsh Uppar, ABVP Pramukh Skanda Kiran, Bhavnish Shetty, and Abhinaya among others participated in the cleaning drive.
