Shimoga: Woman falls prey to online coupon fraud; loses Rs 1.73 lakhs

Shimoga: An incident of online cheating was reported from here where a woman lost Rs 1.73 lakhs after accepting a message telling her that she had won a Rs 12 lakh Naaptol online shopping coupon.

On September 4, the woman, a resident of Navuleya Veerabhadreshwara layout here received a letter stated to be from Naaptol Online Shopping Limited bearing a Kolkata address and informing her that she has won a Rs 12 lakh prize.

The woman called the mobile numbers mentioned in the letter. On the call, she was informed that she won the prize through her mobile number as a gift for her birthday.

Later, she was informed that she will receive the prize money after paying Central and State government taxes and instructed her to transfer the money to the SBI account of a Rita Roy.

Likewise, the woman deposited money through cheques into the mentioned bank account in instalments of Rs 24,000, Rs 51,000 and Rs 1,02,000.

After learning of the fraud the woman has registered a complaint at the city’s CEN police station.
