Shirva: The family in a house at Nadibettu here has performed an ancestral ritual which they could not perform for almost 70 years.

As per the family tradition, a ‘Bhagina’ is offered to the Papanashini river only when the river water reaches the main stairs at the house’s doorway.

Heavy rains lashed the Udupi district for the past two days. All rivers in the district are overflowing including the Papanashini.

For the first time in three-quarters of a century, the river’s water reached the house’s stairs.

Elders of the house, after performing the ritual, stated that in all these years there was never enough rains that made the river water reach their house. However, this year it finally did.

Neighbours from the locality also visited the house to witness this rare historical event.
