In a shocking instance, a Shivamogga central prison warder Ashfaque committed suicide at his flat in the police quarters during a WhatsApp video call to his wife, Shifa.

Ashfaque is said to have taken the extreme step after returning home from a friend’s birthday party.  He called Shifa, who was at her parental home and enquired about everyone’s well-being before taking the extreme step.

Shifa immediately alerted jail officials who rushed to Ashfaque’s residence. They found his body hanging from the ceiling fan when they reached there.

A native of Belagavi, Ashfaque had joined the police department a year ago and this was his first posting.

It is not yet known what led him to commit suicide. An investigation is underway.
