Shivamogga: A wild elephant died after coming into contact with an electric fence set up to protect crops near Ayanuru in Shivamogga Taluk. Following the incident, the Forest Department officials have detained the landowner involved.
The areas of Sirigere and Puradalu in Shivamogga Taluk have seen increased incidents of wild elephant disturbances. Local residents had urged authorities to either drive away or capture these elephants. In response, a forest operation was carried out by bringing in three elephants from Sakrebyle Elephant Camp to drive away the wild ones.
During this operation, one of the elephants was found dead in a trench near Ayanuru. Preliminary investigations by forest officials indicated that the animal’s death was due to contact with an electric wire fence.
Initially, officials suspected that the elephant may have fallen into the trench and was unable to get out. However, upon closer inspection, they found broken electric wires nearby.
The landowner has been taken into custody in connection with the incident. A post-mortem examination is scheduled for Wednesday, officials said.
