Bengaluru: Congress leaders in Karnataka on Sunday hailed appointment of Sonia Gandhi as the party interim president.

Former chief minister Siddaramaiah congratulated her for accepting the decision of the Congress Working Committee on Saturday.

Talking to reporters here, he said though CWC members tried to persuade Rahul Gandhi to continue as party chief, he was adamant on his decision to quit on moral grounds.

Rahul Gandhi had resigned as Congress president after the party’s debacle in the April Lok Sabha elections.

State Congress president Dinesh Gundu Rao welcomed the CWCs decision.

Excellent choice by the CWC. No better person than Sonia Gandhi to take over Congress President. At this crucial juncture, her sage and mature leadership is the need of the hour. Im sure the entire rank and file will welcome this decision,” he tweeted.
