Raksha Bandhan 2019 will be celebrated on Thursday, August 15, coinciding with Independence Day this year. The festival highlights the bond and beautiful relationship between brothers and sisters. Over the years, the day has gathered more meanings, signifying not just sibling love but also communitarian harmony, and have also been used by environmentalists in their bid to save trees. The day, ultimately, stands for love and compassion.
Significance of Rakhi or Raksha Bandhan:
The festival is synonymous with the love and bond between brothers and sisters. On this day, a sister ties rakhi (sacred thread) around the wrist of their brother.
During the rituals, sisters pray for the long life of their brothers. In turn, brothers promise to protect their sisters all through their life and also give gifts to their sisters. The festival is observed as a symbol of duty between brothers and sisters.
Though the origin of this day is not precisely known, there are several stories in mythology that refer to the festival.
So, on this joyous occasion, do not forget to wish all your siblings and make their day even more special.
