Six government schools in Karavali to get heritage tag!

Mangaluru: Six schools from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district have been selected along with 100 government schools in the state for the honour of heritage tag for completing 100 years of functioning.

In this connection, the state government has already selected the schools through the education department and released a grant of Rs 2.50 lakh in the first phase for their development.

This decision has been taken to with the aim to introduce the new generation to the heritage base of some government schools which are more than 100 years old.

Six schools from Udupi and DK have been included in the selection list and of the more than 1,000 schools in the state, 75 primary and 25 high schools have been selected.  In the year 2018-19, the government had decided to identify 100 schools as heritage schools and upgrade them.

DK out of primary schools

Of the government schools in the district, Vittal government model higher primary school which was constructed in 1879 and Uppinangady government model higher primary school which was created in 1836 have been selected. The 1893 constructed Tekkatte government higher primary school in Udupi district and the 1895 Brahmavar government higher primary school in the same district have been selected. Of the high schools, 1912 DK district Sampaje government high school and 1865 Kundapur government pre university college high school have been selected.

Selection criteria

Of the total 2,070 government schools in DK district, 3 high schools and 74 primary schools have complete 100 years. Of the 700 government schools in Udupi district, 3 high schools and 61 primary schools have completed 100 years. Out of so many schools the selection criteria include the school which are the oldest and the number of students in them. This scheme also includes the aim to conserve the cultural heritage of the basic design of the building. Along with this, various activities will be held to inspire the children at these government schools.

In order to provide these historic facets to the future students a book will also be released. A circular has been sent to all district offices detailing the information on the selection list and the various programmes that may be conducted.

“Two primary schools and a high school from DK district have been selected for the heritage tag. Already, Rs 2.50 lakh of the first phase of the grant has been released and the school development works have been started,” said Y Shivaramayya, DK DDPI

“Three schools from Udupi district have been selected for the heritage tag. The government has started this programme to repair and conserve the schools which have crossed their centenary of existence. The department circular has already come and the first phase of the grant has been released,’ said Sheshashayana Karinja, Udupi DDPI

“Of the oldest schools, the selection has been done based on the number of students at the school. Since the schools have crossed over a hundred years, it has also been informed that a book will be released as documentation,” informed Shivakumar, Senior Assistant Director, Public Education Department, Bengaluru
