Southern India’s first BSP MLA Zulfikar Hashmi passes away

Bidar: Syed Zulfikar Hashmi (57), the former legislator from Bidar died on Tuesday morning in Hyderabad due to kidney failure.

He had been undergoing dialysis for the past four months and was admitted to Asara Hospital in Hyderabad two days ago due to deteriorating health. He died without responding to the treatment at the hospital.

His funeral will be held on his farm in Ashtur in the taluk here, his family informed.

Hashmi was elected from the Bidar constituency in 1994 with the Bahujan Samaj Party ticket. He was the first MLA from the party in southern India.

Even though he lost later elections and moved to other parties he remained active in politics in the past thirty years.

Hashmi is survived by his wife, three sons and two daughters.
