Mangaluru: Due to the impact of heavy monsoon rains across the coastal region, the holidays for schools and pre-university colleges have been extended. To compensate for the lost learning hours, special classes are expected to start in the two districts in the coming days.
In the districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada, more than 15 holidays have been given to schools within a month. The current concern is how to complete the lessons that were missed during these holidays.
First Exam Postponed
PU teachers have stated that students should have been preparing for the first exam, but due to the holidays, classes could not be conducted, making the exam difficult. The first exam, which was supposed to be held on August 12, has been postponed to August 21 in Dakshina Kannada.
Jayaanand N. Suvarna, the President of the Principals’ Association of Dakshina Kannada, told “Udayavani” that 25% of the lessons should have been completed by now.
Due to the holidays, many lessons are pending, and adjusting them is challenging. There is a possibility of conducting full-day classes on Saturdays and lessons on Sundays as well, he said.
Sunday Classes?
To compensate for the lost classes due to rain, the education departments in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are considering various options. Talks are underway to conduct full-day classes on Saturdays and even lessons on Sundays in both districts to adjust for the lost PU classes.
While discussions are ongoing about conducting Sunday classes for primary and high schools in Udupi, there is less inclination towards Sunday classes in Dakshina Kannada. Meanwhile, some private and aided schools have already started special classes.
Online Classes
Some private schools have already started online classes similar to those during the COVID pandemic. However, some parents have expressed opposition to this. Currently, there are no online classes in government and aided schools. If the rain holidays are extended further, there is a possibility of considering online classes.
