Mangaluru: Town Hall premises which witnesses numerous functions has now become a dump yard. During the operation conducted within Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) limits to remove illegal business on the road side and advertisement panels, the seized materials were dumped at the Town Hall premises.

In any city, Town Hall is a very prestigious and important building. But if one looks at the premises of the Town Hall in the city, one will only find plastic banners, discarded cold drink bottles, paper, cardboard boxes and empty vegetable trays. The Town Hall was renovated just a few months back. During that time too, metal, garbage and the materials remaining after the use for the work were heaped on one side of the Town Hall, due to which the beauty of the Town Hall was spoilt.

Abhorrent situation

If an operation is being conducted to evict business that have encroached footpaths at various locations in the city, the seized items during the operation are being dumped at the Town Halls premises. Because of this, the guests coming for functions at the Town Hall have to face with much disgust the heaps of garbage here. Besides, it also makes one angry seeing the irresponsibility of MCC. Due to the rainwater falling on the garbage, it can also become a potential spot for mosquito breeding. It is being heard that, on rare occasions, a any big programme is organised here, an unnecessary situation of difficulty in vehicle parking is faced, accuse the organizers of such programmes.

Lack of space?

In the backdrop of lack of a convenient place to keep the junk, the things seized during the eviction of business encroaching footpaths and the garbage generated during other occasions is dumped at the Town Hall premises and also on the backside of MCC building. There is an accusation that many places belonging to MCC, located at various locations in the city have been illegally encroached and the corporation is hesitating to initiate any action against them, thereby failing to save the necessary sites.

Town Hall’s beauty can be enhanced with a park

Various cultural programmes and weddings take place daily at the Town Hall. In order to enhance the beauty of the Town Hall, even more, a park can be created. This will provide solace to the visitors here. The public has requested the concerned officials to take necessary actions.

Notice for removal soon

“Soon, government sites within the Corporation’s limits will be identified and the junk heaped at the Town Hall premises will be transferred there,” said Bhaskar K, Mayor
