State govt announces 3-day mourning as mark of respect for Girish Karnad

Bengaluru: The state government on Monday declared a three-day state mourning as a mark of respect for Jnanpith-winning playwright Girish Karnad who passed away early today morning. The government has also declared a holiday on Monday.
Expressing his condolence over Karnad’s demise, Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy said that his last rites will be performed with full state honours.
“Karnad will receive the same honours by the government that other Jnanpith award winners have received,” he said.
During state mourning, the national flag will fly at half-mast atop all government buildings and there will be no official entertainment programmes.
