Steve Smith etched his name in cricketing history on Wednesday by becoming the 15th player to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket. The milestone came on the opening day of the first Test between Australia and Sri Lanka in Galle, where Australia was 145-2 at lunch after electing to bat.

Smith needed just one run to reach the coveted mark, starting the day on 9,999 career runs. On the very first delivery he faced, Smith calmly punched a single to mid-on, cementing his place among the game’s all-time greats. He is the fourth Australian to achieve this feat, joining Ricky Ponting (13,378), Allan Border (11,174), and Steve Waugh (10,927).

The all-time leading Test run-scorer remains India’s Sachin Tendulkar, with an astonishing 15,921 runs to his name.

Smith was unbeaten on 2 at lunch alongside opener Usman Khawaja, who played a solid knock and remained not out on 65. Khawaja had earlier partnered with Travis Head for a 92-run opening stand. Head displayed aggression in spin-friendly conditions, smashing a quick-fire 57 off just 35 balls before being caught at long-on off Prabath Jayasuriya.

Sri Lanka made further inroads when Marnus Labuschagne departed for 20, thanks to a sharp catch at slip by Dhananjaya de Silva off leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay.

Australia is being captained by Smith in this series, as regular skipper Pat Cummins is on paternity leave. The team is riding high after defeating India in a five-Test series and qualifying for the World Test Championship final, set to take place at Lord’s in June against South Africa.

The second and final Test of this series will begin on February 6, also in Galle. With Smith leading the charge, Australia will look to continue their strong start and secure another series win.
