Bengaluru: Strict disciplinary actions will be taken against staff who engage in or abet illegal activities in prisons across the state, warned Home Minister Araga Jnanendra on Friday.

Speaking to reporters, the minister said that recently there were reports of some illegal activities in Ramanagara, Tumkur, Kalaburagi, and Belagavi prisons. A detailed investigation into these infractions has been ordered, he said.

Further, the minister said that Tumkur District Jail Warden Praveen has been suspended from service.

District police personnel raided the Hassan District Jail yesterday and confiscated the illegally stored mobile sets from inmates, he said and added that instruction has been given to take legal recourse against the erring staff who let the mobile phone reach the inmates.

The minister also said that a case has been registered against an inmate of the Belagavi Central Jail for making threatening calls to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari’s office.

State-of-the-art mobile jammers are being installed to prevent the illegal use of mobile phones by inmates at State’s prisons, he added.
