Mangaluru: From this academic year all students admitted to Mangaluru University will have to plant a tree on the campus and nurture it till the end of their academic term.
The move comes as an effort to make the university campus environmentally friendly and students love plants and trees.
2,500 students attend Mangaluru University every year and each year 1,000 students are admitted.
After planting, the student’s name will be digitally registered and tagged in front of the plant.
Mysuru University, through a similar program of tree plantation, earns lakhs of rupees from fruit sales.
Each faculty and department will be allocated a space in the Mangaluru campus for the plantation. The plants, mostly fruit-bearing ones, will be provided by the university.
Once this program starts in the Mangaluru University, it will also be implemented in the 207 colleges affiliated with it in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kodagu districts.
