Suicide pact: Lovers consume poison; boy dead, girl critical

Bhatkal: Two lovers attempted to commit suicide by consuming poison in Soolebeelu forest, Anantavadi, Manki and in a tragic end to thir love affair, the boy has died while the girl is in a critical condition, admitted in a hospital in Udupi.

The deceased is identified as Murudeshwar Janata colony resident Gagan Ishwar Naika(27). The girl is Sangeeta Madeva Naika(24) resident in Kaikini grama panchayat limits, Bedaramane. Both the lovers are old students of Bhatkal Government Degree College.

Gagan had completed BA while Sangeeta had completed B Com. The deceased was working in a construction company in Tarikere, Shivamogga a few months ago and was supposed to report back to work in a couple of months.

Incident synopsis

The couple went to Anantawadi forest on Wednesday afternoon consumed poison between 1 pm and 1.30 pm. Gagan informed about it to one of his friends, and his friends and brother immediately rushed to Anantawadi searching for the lovers. Apparently, they found the lovers after two hours of search by then, Gagan had become too weak.

The friends immediately rushed the lovers in a rickshaw to RNS Hospital, but Gagan was declared to be brought dead. Sangeeta, who was struggling between life and death, has been admitted in hospital.

It is suspected that the dup must have consumed pesticide used for jasmine plants. Police have taken into custody the bottle of poison and taken up investigations.

It is presumed that the lovers decided to take the extreme step fearing that their families might oppose their marriage and the truth is expected to be reveled after investigation. Manki police have registered a case in this regard and the autopsy of the deceased was conducted at Bhatkal government hospital.
