Sullia: In a tragic incident reported from Kodiyal village, a 56-year-old woman succumbed to severe injuries after being set on fire by her brother-in-law on Thursday.

The deceased has been identified as Jayabharathi.

On October 12 night, the accused Shankar Nayak allegedly poured petrol on Jayabharathi while she was asleep and ignited it with a lighter. Both Jayabharathi and Shankar suffered injuries in the incident.

Jayabharathi, whose husband passed away over a year ago, lived with her son in the same house as Shankar. Recently, her son had left abroad thus only Jayabharathi and Shankar were present at home.

It is said that Shankar harbored animosity toward Jayabharathi despite her caring for him due to his ailments. Shankar has since been arrested.
