Sullia: Bellare Police on Tuesday arrested the suspect in connection with the murder of a woman at the APMC market here.

Nalini (55), a resident of Pataje in Bellare village, was murdered on Sunday night after being hit on the head with a stone. A case was registered at Bellare police station.

The police have arrested Jayarama Naik, son of Venkappa from Jogiyadka, Kalmadka, in connection with the murder.

Nalini had left home two years ago but visited occasionally. She spent nights at bus stops and in front of shops. Similarly, Jayarama Naik, who also struggled with alcoholism, had left home and spent his nights at bus stops and the market.

On Sunday night, Nalini and Jayarama were both staying at the APMC market. It is reported that a quarrel ensued when Nalini accidentally stepped on Jayarama’s foot during the night.

In an inebriated state, Jayarama picked up a stone and threw it at Nalini, who was lying there. When Jayarama woke up in the morning, he realized that Nalini was dead and immediately went into hiding.

During the investigation, Bellare police suspected Jayarama, as he also slept in various places like Nalini. After searching, they discovered his whereabouts in Jogiyadka on Tuesday. Upon questioning, Jayarama confessed to throwing the stone at Nalini, leading to his arrest.

Sullia Circle Inspector Satyanarayana, Bellare SI Santosh B.P., and the police staff participated in the operation.
